I currently do my photo work with a Nikon D300.

Its a DX format camera. It got 12.3 Mpx, 51 point autofocus with 3d tracking, 6 fps (8 if you add a battery pack), low noise from 200-3200 ISO and extended range to 6400 equivalent, weather sealing and much more..
Nikon says this is a Pro-level DSLR, but this was actually my first real camera, and it has worked just fine to learn with. Letting you shoot incredible pictures almost instantly, and more than one year later, there is still a lot to learn about the camera, so you will certainly not out grow it too fast.

As I mentioned this was my first camera, but some of the stuff on "the big book of norway" was shot before I bought my Nikon. A lot of that material is actually taken with a mobile phone. The Nokia N95.

I know it is old and "well used", but when it comes to takeing pictures it still beats the crap out of the very hip iPhone :)
